Gum Springs Park in Shawnee, Kansas
After a comprehensive renovation, Gum Springs Park in Shawnee was officially reopened in spring 2024, just in time for its 45th anniversary. The result is a modern, inclusive playground that invites children of all ages and abilities to play together. The playground’s bright colors create a visual sensory experience and inspire children’s interest in movement and active play.
The centerpiece of the playground is the Lunia L—a climbing structure modeled after a hot-air balloon, with a bright orange membrane that rises 33 ft into the sky.
Inside, a large spatial net invites children to explore and climb. Using nets, ropes, and rope ladders, they can reach the balloon basket and continue further up into the three-dimensional net.
A low ropes course offers exciting adventures and is especially well-suited for children with visual impairments or those who prefer to stay close to the ground.
Various net elements lead to a net platform with a slide. A hammock and a so-called Wasp’s Nest invite children to relax.
The Curly combination is designed for younger children: two platforms of different heights, connected by a suspension bridge, help to develop motor skills and balance. Thanks to the stairs and a ramp, the structure is also accessible to children with limited mobility.
